Labradoodles puppies are a result of careful cross-breeding of a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. Breeding Labradoodle puppies is far more complex than merely introducing a Poodle to a Retriever. In fact, Labradoodle breeders systematically develop breeding plans. They identify dogs of each breed that have the ideal physical characteristics, health and temperament. The breeders also introduce additional dogs and breeds to the breeding stock to maintain exceptional health.
Labradoodles have a charming, almost clown-like appearance. While their body configuration is similar to the Retriever, the dense coat of the Labradoodle will vary quite a bit. Sometimes the coat reflects either the Labrador or the Poodle parentage. Labradoodles may have a smooth short or long hair coat, or their coat may be a reflection of their Poodle parentage with a wooly or fleece-like appearance.
Labradoodles are extremely intelligent and friendly. In part, their clown like appearance is a reflection of their desire to connect with owners or others around them. They actually seem to look to people for directions or cues, often tilting their heads as they look at you with curiosity.
As a result of careful breeding, most Labradoodle breeders offer Labradoodle puppies in one of three size categories – Standard, Medium or Miniature. The size of the puppies is dependent on the size of the Poodle parent. For instance, a Standard Poodle will result in standard sized Labradoodles. While it’s impossible to exactly predict the size of the puppies, most Labradoodle puppies fall within the following size categories:
Standard Labradoodle – Standard Labradoodles can weigh between 45 to 75 pounds, and will reach a height of 23 to 26 inches. Male dogs are usually heavier than adult females.
Medium Labradoodle – Medium Labradoodle will weigh between 40 to 55 pounds, and reach a height of 18 to 21 inches.
Miniature Labradoodle – Miniature Labradoodle will weigh between 25 to 45 pounds, and reach a height of 14 to 17 inches
