Grooming Tips for Doodles

Grooming your Australian Labradoodle or Goldendoodle can be a tricky task, but it’s very important to make sure you’re on top of it.  It can get a little wild, so you want to be consistent with it.

Trimming Claws

Trimming your doodle’s claws is a must do task once or twice a month if you want them to have proper looking claws that won’t scratch anything up. Make sure to get the claws on the inner side of the front paws because if not, they can get caught on something on tear off, which is extremely painful for your dog. A plier-style or guillotine style clipper will do the trick.  You may also want to check out dog nail grinders if you want an alternative tool for clipping.

Dental Care

Caring for your doodle’s teeth is vital to their health.  Just like humans, oral disease can happen if you put off brushing your dog’s teeth.  If you get in the routine of brushing their teeth regularly, any disease can be avoidable.

Grooming the Coat

Bathing them is essential to get them clean.  Their coats can get pretty wild-like, so it’s important to clean them thoroughly.  Shampoo and conditioner are recommended to get all the areas needed to be cleaned.  An all-in-one shampoo and conditioner might be easier just so you don’t have to rinse them down twice.  Many of the doodles’ coats tend to be a soft wavy fleece.  If your dog gets a matt, do not ignore it.  Handle this right away because it could get worse if not. A matt cutter is a useful tool when needed.

Things You’ll Need:

  • Nail Trimmers
  • Shampoo and Conditioner
  • Towels
  • Steel comb (for brushing their coat)
  • Matt cutter

You can cut your doodle’s coat at home with the right tools, using dog clippers, comb set, scissors, and shears.

It’s recommended to take your doodle to a professional dog groomer, so you don’t have to go through the entire process.  Pick your groomer carefully just like you would with your own hair stylist! Cleaning them and cutting their nails can easily be done at home though.
