Keeping Your Labradoodle in Tip Top Shape
Labradoodle puppies are beautiful dogs. One of the most distinctive features of the breed is their coat. Even though the coat varies with some puppies, they all require special grooming. Labradoodle breeders recommend that you regularly groom your Labradoodle puppies to accustom them to regular grooming.

As Labradoodle puppies age their coat changes. All dogs have a puppy coat, which transitions to a thicker, denser adult coat. Most dogs will simply shed their puppy coats, but Labradoodle puppies need a little help. Because they are non-shedding dogs, the hair won’t drop all over the place. They need to be regularly brushed to rid them of the puppy coat. If their puppy coat is not brushed out, it can tangle with the new coat as it grows in and cause mats.
As Labradoodle breeders, we recommend that you start your grooming routine with a good brush. Labradoodles have a “top coat” and a coat underneath. It’s easy to simply brush out the top coat, but you actually need to get down to the skin and comb outwards. If you don’t start at the base of the hair and work your way out, you’ll simply brush the top layer and the bottom layer will become matted.
If your Labradoodle puppies have short hair, simply brushing the hair out is sufficient. You’ll be able to brush through all the layers. But even a long-haired, smooth coat Labradoodle will require layer by layer brushing.
Most Labradoodle breeders recommend you groom according to the type of coat Labradoodle puppies exhibit. For instance:
- Wool coat Labradoodles – The wool coat doesn’t drape down, but instead has tight curls. This coat needs to be clipped or trimmed about 3 times a year to keep the dog clean and reduce matting.
- Fleece coat Labradoodles – This coat is wavy and long. Fleece coated dogs need to be trimmed approximately 3 times a year, but they may also require more frequent trimming around the eyes and beard. Cut the hair around the eyes (straight across) so that the eyes are visible.
Before you take your Labradoodle puppies to a groomer, make sure that they have experience trimming labradoodles. If not, there’s a good chance that your Labradoodle will be returned to you with a shaved coat – many groomers simply do not understand how to groom these special dogs.
